BTA FUND DONATES CLASSROOM FURNITURE TO IBEJU-LEKKI SCHOOL

It all begins with an idea.

Lagos, Nigeria - Entrepreneur and Investor, Basheer Tosin Ashafa, has successfully facilitated the donation of school furniture, consisting of 100 chairs and tables, to St. John’s R.C.M. School, Aiyeteju town, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Lagos State.

The donation was made by the Special Committee for the Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) in Lagos State, after a series of intervention efforts and requests for support were made by Mr. Ashafa. Furthermore, it also complements Mr. Ashafa’s personal resources which were used to provide an extensive facelift in a three-year structured rehabilitation program. In August 2020, the new look of St. John’s R.C.M. School was commissioned, with members of the public in attendance.

In a statement by Mr. Ashafa, “We have seen that progress is an action word. An effective collaboration between the government and private organizations and individuals can only lead to progress. We are grateful to the Special Committee and its chairman, Mr. Hakeem Smith, for this support. I equally commend the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for keeping to his promise that the poor state of infrastructure in public schools, especially those in rural areas, will be addressed.”

The BTA Education Fund has formally announced its financial support to ScholarX, a key stakeholder in the Digital Skills Initiative program of the Lagos State government, which is administered by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education (OSAE); in partnership with LoftyInc Allied Partners Limited and Advent Management Solutions Limited.

With the donation from the BTA Education Fund, ScholarX, an education technology and access to education finance start-up, will ensure the successful sensitization and registration of children in Aiyeteju village and other surrounding communities in Ibeju Lekki.

The aim of the DSIL program is to train and equip young Lagos primary and secondary school students (ages 8 -16) with valuable digital skills. ScholarX will be facilitating the registration of students across all six education districts in the state, in addition to ensuring their engagement on the provided virtual learning platform.

In the DSIL program, students will learn digital skills from Scratch.mit.edu and Code.org that cuts across basic programming, introduction to creative programing, Arts, Storytelling, and Games. There will also be a final project to be worked on by the students where they will be required to develop an independent project by defining an idea to work on, and present the project and its development process.

BTA FUND, CANTAGALI LIMITED AND FOODCLIQUE SUPPORT INITIATIVE PARTNER ON SCHOOL REHABILITATION AT IBEJU-LEKKI, LAGOS STATE

It all begins with an idea.

On August 21, 2020, the BTA Education Fund formally unveiled the newly rehabilitated school complex at St. John’s R.C.M. School, a public nursery and primary school located in Aiyeteju town, Ibeju-Lekki - a project that had been ongoing since 2018. The rehabilitation was carried out in partnership with Cantagali Limited and FoodClique Support Initiative, a domestic hunger relief charity based in Lagos, Nigeria.

The decision to renovate the school was taken in 2018 after a school feeding program was initiated by the BTA Fund and FoodClique Support Initiative. The school feeding program aimed to provide at least one meal a day for children from low-income families.

According to the founder of the BTA Education Fund, Basheer Tosin Ashafa, “I was moved by the rise in class attendance after a few months of implementing the school feeding program; and the untenable sight of children sitting on classroom floors during classes, due to broken and disused furniture, broken windows and leaking roofs.”

“Upon resumption for the 2020/2021 school session, the students of St. John’s R.C.M. primary school, Aiyeteju town, will walk into a different school. They will sit on new chairs and take lessons from new whiteboards. They will have new windows and their roofs will no longer be leaking. Their dignity will be restored and they can be proud of their school. But I am even more confident that their new learning environment will inspire them to achieve better academic results.”

The project partners also announced that the entire renovation was deliberately contracted to artisans and technicians living within the Ibeju-Lekki community. From the bricklaying, carpentry, painting, and the welding, they ensured that local labor was hired in a bid to financially empower local artisans.
